Climate-Resilient WASH

Strengthening Water, Sanitation & Hygiene in a Changing Climate

Rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, and unpredictable rains are disrupting food production across Africa. But hunger isn’t just about yield, it’s about access, diversity, and knowledge.

At AFRIHECOM, we’re reimagining food systems as integrated networks that link climate-smart agriculture, nutrition education, and cultural heritage, all powered by strategic communication.

💧  What We Do

We work at the intersection of climate science, public health, and communication to ensure WASH systems are not only functional — but future-proofed.

✅ Community-Led Risk Mapping

We train communities to map flood-prone latrines, drying wells, and contamination hotspots using participatory tools. This local knowledge informs resilient planning and early warning systems.

✅ Behavior Change Communication (SBCC)

During droughts and floods, misinformation spreads faster than disease. We use radio dramas, community theater, and SMS alerts to promote safe hygiene practices — like water purification, handwashing, and menstrual hygiene — in culturally relevant ways.

✅ Green Infrastructure Integration

We support the construction of solar-powered boreholes, rainwater harvesting systems, and wetland-filtered water points that reduce dependency on fragile water sources.

✅ Policy Advocacy & Institutional Strengthening

We collaborate with county governments and ministries to integrate climate risk into WASH planning, ensuring long-term funding and adaptive management.

🌱 Our Approach 🎯 Why It Matters
Communication as Infrastructure

We don’t just install taps — we install trust.

Through storytelling, community dialogues, and youth-led media, we ensure that:

  • Marginalized voices shape WASH solutions
  • Local knowledge is validated and integrated
  • Misinformation is countered with science and empathy

“Clean water is a right. But in a climate crisis, it’s also a strategy.”

“After the 2023 floods, our latrines were gone and children got sick. AFRIHECOM helped us rebuild elevated toilets and taught us how to purify water. Now we’re ready for the next rainy season.”
Community Health Volunteer, Nyalenda Slums, Kisumu

  • 40% reduction in cholera cases during flood season in pilot communities
  • 300+ solar-powered water points mapped for climate vulnerability
  • Women and girls spend less time fetching water, improving school and livelihood access
